To My Father and His Many Band Aids

The funny thing about poison ivy

Is that it
Lives
With you.

It’s in the gardens,
In the grass,
And in the places
You haven’t even looked yet.

The other thing about poison ivy

is that:
When you get it-
You never really know
What you’re
Getting.
Some cases are
Harder to get rid of
than others.

Most people might:
Cover it up.
Stop the spreading.
Out of sight.
Stop the itching.
Out of mind.
Can’t spread it to other people.

Some use Band-Aids.

But Poison Ivy is special.
Its ooze can’t dry when kept
Undercover.
It just grows
And grows
And
Festers.

Tear the Band-Aid off.
The medicine is oxidated for a reason.
The cure is
Air.
Exposure.
The affecting of
Outside variables.
It may take many applications and
Days of healing.
And It could spread.
It will spread.

But then,
Finally,
It will dry up.
Like a reservoir
Beaten with the
Sun.

And the poison
Will
go
With
it
